Attendance/Absence

Attendance
Regular attendance is compulsory and necessary for success. Section 12 of the Alberta School Act states, “A student shall attend school regularly and punctually”.  Responsibility for attendance lies with the student and his/her parent/guardian.

Late/Absence
Muriel Clayton is now using the Safe Arrival absence reporting system.

Absences can be reported in advance using any of the following methods, which are accessing 24 hours/day:

When a student is late or absent for medical reasons or appointments it will be regarded as an excused absence or late.

If a student is late or absent because they slept in or missed the bus it is not considered excused. Any missed time/work will be expected to be made up by the student.

If a student arrives late to school, they must check in at the office to get signed in. If a student needs to leave the school before the end of the school day, they are required to be signed out by a parent or guardian.

Extended Absence
Parents may wish to remove their child from school for an extended period of time (longer than 3 days) for reasons other than those outlined in the Alberta School Act (bereavement, illness or other emergency).

Muriel Clayton Middle School staff does not encourage this practice, however, in the event that parents make this decision, a letter is to be provided to your student’s teacher and grade level administrator, two weeks prior, outlining the reason for the absence.

It should be noted that teachers are under no obligation to provide additional work or tutoring for work covered during time missed, as this is a parental choice.
